Mid-
July the Bitterroot Valley of Western Montana comes alive with
a timber sports event that you won’t want to miss! That’s
when Darby Logger Days celebrates the skill and bravery of those
who work in the time honored tradition of logging. The laid
back atmosphere of this fun and family oriented weekend draws
thousands of enthusiastic onlookers and expert competitors.
From the very young to the very old, there’s something
for everyone!
The weekend gets started at 5 p.m. on Friday evening, with food vendors, beer tent, crafts and educational booths. At 6 p.m. move into the main arena for the boxing over water, kid’s choker races, tug of war and local logger sports activities. Kick up your heels and dance in the moonlight Bitterroot style both Friday and Saturday evenings to a live band.
Saturday
morning a community parade winds its way south through the
quaint town of Darby, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at the
Logger Day grounds south of town on Highway 93. The real heart
of Logger Days is the events that celebrate and honor Darby’s
logging traditions. Nineteen of those traditional logging
events have been scheduled, including axe throwing, pole climbing,
log roll and cross cut sawing. Competition for the timber
sports begins at 10 a.m.
Look
for plenty of activities for your little Lumberjacks, some
of which are free, and many with cash, prizes and gift certificate
giveaways. Kids will love “Grammy’s Corner”,
where there will be a watermelon eating contest, tricycle
races and tug-of-war contests for different age levels --
and the famous sawdust pile (with hidden money). Registration
for the kid’s events starts at 11:00 a.m. in “Grammy’s
Corner” and the contests start at noon.
This year, Darby Logger Days is raffling a 2008 FXCWC Rocker C Harley-Davidson. Tickets are for sale around the valley, and go for $20 apiece. Only 2000 tickets will be sold to keep the odds of winning good. The drawing is on Saturday after the logging competition is over – won’t you look good riding off into the sunset on this sweet ride?!!!
